The operation is part of an ongoing effort throughout the month of April to curb the use of handheld devices behind the wheel.
So far this month, more than 70 drivers have been cited for violating California’s hands-free cellphone law, the Visalia Police Department said in a statement.
California’s distracted driving laws, in effect since 2008, prohibit drivers from holding a phone or electronic device while driving. That includes talking, texting or using apps.

Police said first-time offenders face a fine, and drivers who violate the law a second time within 36 months may have a point added to their record.
Officials urge drivers to silence their phones or store them out of reach while on the road. Those needing to make a call or use their phone are encouraged to pull over to a safe parking spot.
